Originally opened in 1988 at the Marina in Minimes the aquarium covered 1600 sq metres and held, in its 36 tanks, over half a million litres of water. In 2001 the need for expansioned caused the aquarium to move to its present home in the Old Port in the heart of the city.
With an area of 8445 sq metres the aquarium is now home to over 12,000 marine animals from 600 species who inhabit over 3 million litres of water.
