Eglise Notre Dame la Grande

Eglise Notre Dame la Grande

This Roman Catholic Church, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, sits at the heart of Poitiers and is famous for its magnificent West Front which consists of intricate carving and statuary.

Notre Dame le Grande is world renowned as a masterpiece of Romanesque religious art.

In 1996 the church underwent a thorough clean and restoration and is now gleaming white.

The church houses a statue of the Virgin Mary called “The Virgin of the Keys”. It is claimed that since the early 15th century this very statue has been carried in proccesion around the town ramparts.

The interior of the church was origianally covered in frescos dating back to the 12th century but today the only survivor is on the choir vault. The majority of the current internal decorations take the form of murals dating from the 19th century.
