Potager Arc en Ciel de Bosmelet

Potager Arc en Ciel de Bosmelet sits within Le Chateau de Bosmelet et Jardins.

The two-acre kitchen garden was already in existence when Baroness Laurence de Bosmelet created her “rainbow potager” where more than 900 varieties of vegetables, flowers and fruit combine in carefully sequenced chromatic areas (Saphire, Amber, Ivory and Garnet). They were the inspiration for the first French garden to exhibit at the Chelsea Flower show (Gold Medallist in 2000).

To reach the potager, visitors traverse the forecourt by following the grass pathway of one of the four St. Andrew’s crosses marked out in the wild meadow with its four hearts. Each heart has a dominant colour thus symbolising the four seasons.

In 2004 the French Ministry of Culture launched the “Jardin Remarquable” classification to help safeguard Franceâ’s horticultural heritage. The gardens at Chateau de Bosmelet, which include the “rainbow potager” were in the inaugural selection.
